How to make a WindowsToGo usb drive

WindowsToGo is a copy of Windows designed to be run off a usb flash drive, this is great for when you want your own workspace for a computer that isn't yours or to help you recover your computer from a failure. Today im going to show you how to make a WindowsToGo drive

for this i recommend making a Windows 8 or 8.1 WindowsToGo drive but you can use Windows 7 or Windows 10 for this

You'll need:

  • A working computer running Windows 7 or later

  • a USB flash drive with a minimum of 32gb capacity

  • a windows installation iso image of Windows 7,8 or 10, you can get this from archive sites or the official Microsoft download

Step 1:

Download and install the freeware version of AOMEI Partition assistant from here from experience Rufus is a bit difficult sometimes so we are going to be using this program

Step 2:

Once AOMEI partition assistant is installed, launch it and click "all tools" followed by "Windows To Go creator"

Step 3:

AOMEI partition assistant should close and a WindowsToGo maker wizard should pop up, click next then select your ISO image

Step 4:

Afterward select your USB drive you want to use and click next to begin the process

WARNING: THIS WILL FORMAT YOUR DRIVE, MAKE BACKUPS!

NOTE: This process will take a long time depending on the speed of your computer and USB drive, it isn't frozen, please be patient

How do i boot off the USB drive?

On your desired machine shut it down and boot it into the boot menu by pressing the right key, this will depend on the make and model of your computer.

Then on the list of boot devices select your USB drive, its typically has the brand name of the USB device in the name. If everything is done correctly you should boot into your WindowsToGo workspace.

NOTE: if you are starting your WindowsToGo workspace for the first time you will be prompted to set up Windows as you would with a brand new computer, set up the system and you should be all good

Some issues you may encounter:

Q. My WindowsToGo wont boot, it gives me an error or blue screen

A. If you just made the drive try making the drive again, if that doesn't help your computer may not be compatible with the version of Windows you chose, make sure the computer is 64 bit if you used a 64 bit Windows and try again, if you used an operating system older or newer than Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, i cannot guarantee you will get it working, if you have used a version older or newer than the recommended operating systems, please use another ISO image with the recommended copy of Windows

Q. My resolution is very low

A. This is common amongst WindowsToGo drives containing Windows 7 or Windows 10, try adjusting the resolution settings in control panel, if this doesn't work try installing the display drivers for the computer you are trying to use
